ABOUT ME

Johnni Medina is a Brooklyn-based writer and marketer, with a background in digital marketing, long-form editorial copy, and interactive storytelling. They are currently passionate about harnessing generative AI to work better and smarter.

MY STORY

I’ve been working as a writer and producer in some capacity since I graduated with a BFA in Theatre in 2013. I spent several years serving as a creative factotum for a small Brooklyn based games and retail store. I played many roles in the business, but my key accomplishments included leading our digital marketing efforts, collaborating on the development of immersive narrative tabletop gaming content, and hosting interactive events. My background in theatre, screenwriting, and improv have fueled my ability to offer out-of-the-box creative problem solving and flexibility to match any project’s needs.

In 2021, I transitioned into a full-fledged marketing role. Since then I’ve been working as a content specialist in higher education, producing marketing materials, long-form editorial content, and collaborating on high-level ad campaigns.

I am also deeply involved with generative AI innovation and training. At Pace, I’ve spearheaded pilot programs and served as a lead trainer in ethical and efficient AI use, working with cross-functional teams to incorporate AI into our content strategies. From developing custom GPTs to advising on best practices, I ensure that our initiatives harness AI’s power while staying rooted in a transparent, human-centered philosophy.

My professional journey is a testament to my adaptability as a writer. My strength as a collaborator lies in my ability to mold my voice to the unique needs of my clients, seamlessly transitioning from a polished corporate tone to a more engaging, casual style infused with humor.

My passion for storytelling is not constrained by mediums, genres, or styles. I initially discovered my love for storytelling through playwriting, where I produced numerous original pieces and worked as a new works dramaturg, assisting fellow playwrights in developing their work. During my college years, my fascination with commedia dell'arte and clowning led me to explore the world of improv. I was the artistic director, a team captain, and advanced performer in our undergraduate improv program, and worked as the lead writer, producer, and assistant director for multiple sketch shows, navigating both live performances and digital formats. During this time, I studied screenwriting, connecting with local producers and writing in several 48-hour film festivals.

I moved to New York City in 2018 and soon after delved into the realm of tabletop roleplaying games. Collaborating with Lauren Bilanko from Twenty Sided Store, I played a key role in developing an original, immersive universe where we hosted events, developed tabletop adventures, and created retail products. My journey continues as a screenwriter, and I've participated in the NYC Midnight screenwriting competition, consistently advancing to the semi-finals.

My greatest strengths lie in my nuanced understanding of character voice, mastery of the three-act structure, dedication to representing diverse voices throughout history, and my innate ability to infuse creativity and enjoyment into my projects. Though I pride myself in my adaptability, in my own work I tend to favor character-driven comedies, genre fiction, and historical fiction, focusing on stories of odd people with insightful perspectives. I am always looking to ‘find the fun’ in any project.
